A very French wine with a very American connection!
Americans are among some of the Cazenove`s most enthusiastic supporters. In fact, the first vintage of 1991 served as official wine of the bicentenary of the founding of Cazenovia Village in Upstate New York. There are historical explanations as to why this is.
In mid-1700, Théophile de Cazenove-van Jever, a direct ancestor of the Cazenove owner of the winery at Macau en Médoc, immigrated to North America as general agent for the Holland Land Company, based in Philadelphia. He founded several settlements, named Cazenovia, in Upstate New York and in Pennsylvania. He became an American citizen in 1794. In 1871, in Boston, MA, a street and a place were named after him. His portrait by St Menin hangs at the Corcoran Gallery, in Washington D.C.
